With great sadness we announce the passing of Larry Bruce Stewart in Guelph, Ontario, on August 9, 2025, after a lengthy battle with cancer. A loving husband to Diane Shaw, he was a wonderful father to Kate Shaw Stewart (Tyler Wagler) and grandfather to Elliot and Simon Wagler. Larry was born in Niagara-on-the-Lake in the summer of 1948 to James and Mary Stewart (Wynneck). He attended St. Catharines Collegiate and earned his BA at Brock University where he met Diane.
After graduating he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces, serving as an officer in the PPCLI and Airborne Regiments. He also served in Cyprus with United Nations Peacekeeping. For his second career he attended Georgian College in Owen Sound where he and Diane raised Kate. As a marine navigation officer he worked as captain of The Island Queen in Kingston, the Niagara Riverboat, and The Seguin in Gravenhurst. He ended his sailing career with Algoma Central Marine. As an avid traveller he spent most of his life exploring different countries and cultures (taking a special interest in local cuisines). A true adventurer, he enjoyed scuba diving and deep woods camping. He was Diane and Kate’s favourite travel buddy. He will be greatly missed.
