This column will be appearing monthly with a twofold purpose. Firstly to review some currently popular books as selected by the Monday Night Book Club. Secondly to promote the Friends of the Meaford Library (FOML) in its ongoing service to the community of Meaford and to the Meaford Public Library.
The Book Club meets the second Monday of the month and reviews a selected book. There are 10 members in the group so the reviews I bring are not mine alone, in fact the group decision may well differ from mine. But then I am, as you may be, simply one who enjoys a good read.
In this first instalment I will outline the books we have selected for this year.
September… yes you have a whole month to get this one read! We have selected “Roads End” by Mary Lawson. This is a story of a fictional Northern Ontario town and the people who live there.
October brings a rather unique selection or rather selections. “Old Filth” and “The Man with the Wooden Hat” both written by Jane Gardam, tells the same story one from the husband’s point of view and one from the wife’s. The reading of “Old Filth” first is recommended.
November brings a remembrance to the recently departed writer and sage Maya Angelou with “Mom and Me and Mom”
December… you know you can find time in the busy Christmas hustle to sit down and put your feet up with a good book! This month we are looking at “Hard Choices” by Hillary Rodham Clinton. Likely to spark a political debate but we will see.
January brings us back in time to an earlier Toronto with “The Massey Murder” by Charlotte Gray. The Massey family famous for farm machinery and actors and Governor Generals has its own mystery.
February is our remembrance of WW1 with “The Bird Song” by Sebastian Faulks.
That should get you started until we see if this is a hit.
Did You Know?
The principle method for the FOML to provide support to the Library is through book sales at the Net Shed which can be found at the harbour at the base of Collingwood Ave. All sales are by donation.
The FOML provide a summer concert series Sunday nights. Come on out to the Harbour Pavilion. Monies from these concerts also go to support the Library.
