Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a Brampton resident following an incident involving a construction flagger in the Municipality of Grey Highlands.
On September 14, at approximately 3:44 p.m., Grey Bruce OPP received a report of a construction flag person being threatened while working on Toronto Street in Markdale.
The flag person was directing traffic in an active construction zone as work continued on Toronto Street. Investigation revealed that an individual who had been stopped in traffic due to the construction became increasingly agitated while waiting. The individual exited their vehicle on multiple occasions and approached the flag person to complain about the delay.
During the interactions, the individual’s behaviour escalated, and threats of harm were directed toward the flag person.
A 31-year-old from Brampton has been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with:
- Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm
- Obstruct Peace Officer
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on December 10.
The Grey Bruce OPP reminds motorists that delays in construction zones can be frustrating; however, traffic control personnel are present to protect the safety of construction workers, motorists, pedestrians, and all other road users.
Flaggers perform an important role in ensuring traffic moves safely through work zones and are often working only a short distance from moving vehicles. Motorists are urged to remain patient, obey directions from traffic control personnel, and exercise courtesy when travelling through construction areas.
Threatening, intimidating, or harassing workers who are carrying out their duties is unacceptable and may result in criminal charges.
