It was a perfect summer evening for the Rotary Fish Fry last Friday evening. The Rotary pavilion at the harbour was jammed, and a long line showed that people were happy to be out and about and enjoying Meaford in the summer. Warm temperatures, balmy breezes, and good company made a delicious meal all the more tasty.
This year’s menu included battered and deep-fried-on-the-spot pickerel, Kettles Restaurant famous coleslaw, a potato (I have to confess that I am somewhat of a potato connoisseur, and this was a yummy potato, with lots of flavour and a good texture), and a choice of Grandma Lambe’s pies – so yummy! And several members of the Coyotes running club kept circulating, making sure that your lemonade was kept topped up.
The Meaford Rotary Club is known for its charitable work in our town, such as support for the Food Bank, attainable housing with the Godfrey apartments, and more. Their latest venture is to purchase the former Church of the Nazarene on Trowbridge St., setting up a thrift shop upstairs and the Food Bank still in its location downstairs. With the Midas Mart no longer available, donations have been pouring in of gently used items, such as clothing, household goods, and occasional treasures, with volunteers helping on both the Thrift Shop and Food Bank levels.
The Fish Fry is one of the Meaford Rotary’s fundraising ventures to carry on their support in this community, and with the latest count being over 650 people fed on Friday night, I think it must have been one of the most successful. I hope that it helps to make a dent in the funds required to continue with their good deeds!
