New Youth-Run Bicycle Shop Opens For Victoria Village Residents

A new bicycle shop will be available for residents of Victoria Village in Meaford this summer, thanks to two motivated secondary school students with support from some great community partnerships.

The TLC Bicycle Shop, which opened on May 25, is operated by Lucas Van Horn and Tyler White. The pair first became involved in bicycle repair through the Ride Smart Cycling Education Program, which focuses on promoting safe cycling behaviors, teaching essential cycling abilities, and creating safer riders and future drivers. While attending the program, offered in partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in 2021, the students expressed an interest in working on their own bicycles. Recognizing their passion and potential, the OPP and the Ride Smart Program provided the pair with proper bike tools and manuals to assist them and build their skills in bicycle repair.

Their initiative gained momentum, and last year Grey County Housing stepped up to provide an office space at Victoria Village, allowing the pair to begin plans for a youth-run bike shop just for residents.

The TLC Bicycle Shop has gathered significant support from various partners committed to youth engagement and community development. The Rotary Club of Meaford and the Municipality of Meaford have provided essential funds to outfit the bike shop, while Hills Bike Shop is offering training and ongoing support. Grey County Housing also provided $2600 in funding to staff the shop for the summer months.

The OPP is grateful for our community partners who came together to establish the TLC Bicycle Shop,” said Adam Belanger, Grey Bruce OPP. “We look forward to the positive impact it will have on youth empowerment and cycling safety in Meaford.”

“This shop not only provides a valuable service to residents but also fosters a great sense of entrepreneurship,” said Grey County Warden Brian Milne. “Grey County is proud to support this fantastic project.”
