Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) advise residents of a recent increase in trailer thefts throughout the area. Stolen trailers include utility, boat, and enclosed cargo types, often taken from driveways, farm properties, and business lots.
To help prevent trailer theft, residents are encouraged to follow these tips:
- Park trailers in secure, well-lit areas that are not easily visible from the road.
- Use wheel locks and hitch locks to deter easy towing.
- Remove trailer tires or hitches when not in use.
- Install motion-sensor lighting or security cameras near trailer storage locations.
- Etch unique identifiers or serial numbers onto the trailer frame.
- Keep a record of trailer details (VIN, license plate, photos) to assist police.
- Stay vigilant, even in quieter rural areas.
