Sydenham Bruce Trail Club Invites Community to Tree Planting Event

The Sydenham Bruce Trail Club (SBTC) is inviting the public to a family-friendly tree planting event on Sunday, October 18, at 1 p.m. at the Bruce Trail Conservancy’s (BTC) Rockview Bluffs Nature Reserve in Georgian Bluffs.

At this hands-on volunteer event, participants will have the opportunity to plant native tree and shrub saplings to transform an abandoned field into healthy habitat for birds, animals, and pollinators. Suitable for all ages, the event is appropriate for new and experienced gardeners alike. SBTC Biodiversity Team volunteers will be on hand to provide information and support.

“Events like the upcoming tree planting at Rockview Bluffs Nature Reserve are a great way for the public to make a tangible connection with nature in their communities,” said Michael McDonald, Chief Executive Officer of the Bruce Trail Conservancy. “We are sincerely grateful to the volunteers of our Sydenham Bruce Trail Club and members of the public for the ways they care for our ribbon of wilderness and support recreation in communities across the region. Their time and effort will have an impact that will last for generations.”

The planting takes place in a grassy field so participants are encouraged to wear sturdy closed-toe footwear and clothing they don’t mind getting dirty, including long pants that can be tucked into socks. Those who have gardening gloves and tools should bring them. Additional tools will be available.

Parking for the event is on the west side of West Street north of Grey Road 17B and south of Vault Works Road. From there, a 300-meter walk will take participants to the planting site. There will be SBTC volunteers at the site to help with parking and give directions.

Registration is required. To register for this event please email the Biodiversity Team Coordinator at sbtcbiodiversity@gmail.com. Please advise how many people will be attending. Further instructions and directions will be sent to all registrants via email.

This event is part of the BTC’s Passport to Nature, a year-round community engagement program that offers a series of free or low-cost guided experiences to help people connect with nature along the Bruce Trail. Participants at the tree planting will be able to collect a Passport to Nature sticker towards the program’s badge and prize offerings.
