Grey County Historical Society Meeting to Focus on Bees

The Grey County Historical society is holding its November meeting in Meaford in the Terrace Room of Meaford Hall on Wednesday, November 19 at 1:30 pm. The guest speaker is local beekeeper, Richard Elzby who will be talking about the history of beekeeping both worldwide and here in Ontario.

Archeologists have found evidence of an advanced honey producing industry in the ruins of Rehov, Israel dating back to the 10th century BC. Early Ontario records suggest that many United Empire Loyalists brought bees to Ontario in the 1780’s and 1790’s after the American revolution. While most of us associate bees with honey we should also remember that about one third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination, most of which is accomplished by bees.

As well as telling us about the history of beekeeping, Richard will describe his own operation and discuss the threats of modern pesticides to bees and other pollinators. Please come and enjoy this opportunity to learn about one of nature’s most valuable species.
