Great Expectations for Your Golf Game

Cameron Burechalis

We all have high expectations for the upcoming golf season. Every year we get the opportunity to start with a clean slate, hoping that this year our game will be better than last year’s.

Many of us hope not only to play more rounds of golf this season, but also to lower our scores.

When you set your expectations too high for any sport, then you put too much pressure on yourself to perform. Falling short of your expectations will often lead to disappointment and cause you to question your abilities and affect your self confidence.

This season, the best way to prevent disappointment in your golf game is to prepare a game plan. Start by setting some realistic goals for yourself and commit them to writing. Goals might include becoming a better putter, or improving your drives from the tee. You may also set a goal to finally break 100, 90, or even 80 for the first time in your life. Next determine what it is going to take in terms of action to achieve your goals. Achieving your goals might require that you purchase some new equipment, take some lessons to improve your shot making, or establish a weekly practise schedule.

Finally, look at a calendar and set specific dates and time-lines for your golf season. Improving your golf game is like going on a diet – you simply have to stick to it! Avoid the frustration and disappointment that many golfers feel in the spring when their golf game goes south and their scoring is not improving.

This season if you wish to reach your performance goals, then be willing to change your behaviour both on and off the golf course. Stick to your game plan, work hard on your game, and finally achieving your goals will be your reward!
