Post-Election Thoughts

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

I was thinking about the election and I think there are two points that are being missed:

The country is being divided along the same lines as the province – rural vs. urban – again. Once again those in the city will have too much say over what happens in the country. It is a perfect example of why we need to change from ‘first past the post’ to ‘equal representation’, so there would be more co-operation and the city folk will let us have what we need not what they think we need.

My sister did the polls in Toronto and what bothered her was the number of immigrants who came in asking where they put their mark. No matter how she explained that it is up to them to choose, they could not understand.

Just think how they are feeling now that the whole country has been changed without a single bomb dropped, shot fired nor blood spilled. A positive campaign instead of the hate, bigotry, dirty tricks and coercion that they may have been used to, has given them an example of what democracy really is. Now those immigrants we are supposed to fear will see what can happen with the spoken word and will come into the 21st century without violence. All we need is for people to want something better and use their voice to get it. Maybe they will even get education back to supporting the poor not just the rich. We have made our choice and can change it again and again without suffering.

Oh Canada, you stand for me.
