Getting Your Kids into Golf

This summer is a great opportunity for you to get your kids into the game of golf.  Golf gives kids a chance to get outdoors, get some exercise and make new friends. It teaches kids important values like honesty, respect, patience and commitment.

Golf is a game that can be played either just for fun or competitively with others. You don’t have to be good at the game to enjoy it!

When I was just a kid, I would spend my entire summer at the golf course. Our friends would all meet first thing at our local course and would play 27, 36 or even 54 holes each day before our parents picked us up for dinner. When we were not playing golf we were helping out at the range to pick up golf balls or washing clubs in the back shop for members. We would often receive a free bottle of pop or even lunch for our voluntary efforts.

The kids will soon be out of school for the summer and many parents will be looking for activities to help keep their kids busy during the months of July and August. Most of our local clubs offer special rates for juniors that are designed to promote the game of golf. If your kids are keen to learn and play this summer, simply contact your local course to see what kinds of programs are being offered for kids.

Many courses offer clinics, summer camps and special programs for juniors which give the kids an opportunity to get out and play, have fun and meet new friends on the golf course. The first week of July is ‘Take a Kid to the Course’ week. This summer from July 6 -12, many of our local courses offer free green fees for juniors under 16. This means that when an adult pays a regular green fee they can then take a junior out for a free round of golf. It is a great early summer promotion designed to get kids into the game. Visit kidsgolffree.ca to see which clubs in your area are participating in this year’s program.

I have been offering programs for juniors for over twenty years and really enjoy working and developing both their skills and helping to grow the game of golf. This summer two and three day junior golf camps will be offered for juniors at the Meaford Golf Club. They will be run during the weekdays and are open to boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 12. If you have some juniors who would like to participate, simply call or email me to register your kids. Golf clubs will be provided free of charge for those kids that need them.

I believe that it is important that all golf clubs promote junior golf. After all, to ensure the success of the golf industry, we all must work on development programs for new players of all ages.
