Editor,
As a taxpayer who moved to this wonderful community in 2021, I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the severe and ongoing deterioration of Sykes Street. The road conditions from Tim Hortons to Grandview Drive have become absolutely deplorable.
Sykes Street is the main thoroughfare through Meaford. It is the primary route for residents, visitors, and the vital traffic that brings business to our downtown core. Leaving our main artery in this state of neglect sends the wrong message about our town and actively hurts our local economy.
Furthermore, this is no longer just an aesthetic or comfort issue; it is a financial burden on your residents. The severe potholes and uneven surfaces are causing significant, costly damage to our personal vehicles, including ruined alignments, blown tires, and worn-out shocks. Taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for vehicle repairs caused by municipal infrastructure failure.
While we understand that infrastructure funding is complex, the slow pace of resurfacing this critical road is unacceptable. As residents and taxpayers, we need transparency on the timeline for a permanent fix, and we need our Town to take immediate accountability for the state of this road.
I urge members of the community to write to the Council and to the Mayor to prioritize the resurfacing of Sykes Street immediately, before more vehicles are damaged and more local businesses suffer.
Sincerely,
Deborah Miculinic, Meaford
Editor’s Note: Sykes Street is part of provincial Highway 26, and the nearly 3.5 km section from the MTO lot through to Ford Avenue is the ‘Connecting Link’ which is maintained by the municipality but typically 90 percent funded by the province. Meaford applied to the province for funding to rehabilitate this section of road in 2023, but the application was denied. A new application was submitted to the province in November 2025, which was also unsuccessful, however the municipality has issued a tender in order to undertake some of the needed repairs this summer.
