Reader Voting For Their Kids

Dear Editor:

I’m voting for my kids in this federal election. Why? The young people we love so much are in grave danger from devastating weather disruptions, climate catastrophes and adverse health impacts from climate change that are intensifying each and every year.

Drastically cutting the fossil fuel pollution that has sparked the climate crisis is a sacred duty we owe our kids, grandkids and all generations to come.

Yes, we need all parties to address the dire threats to our democracy and economy from Trump, his threat of annexation and his tariffs. And yes the crises of housing, health and affordability are also crucial to tackle and solve. But unless we concentrate now on reducing emissions in order to stabilize our climate, all of these other issues will pale by comparison to the erratic, unpredictable and calamitous future our children and grandchildren will be forced to try to survive.

We cannot afford to vote for any party that refuses to act boldly on climate.

In this federal election casting a ballot for the sake of our kids – and theirs – is critical. I’m voting to protect what I love most now because later will be too late.

Sincerely,

Melissa Tervit, Meaford
