I recently received a note from a sitting member of Meaford council expressing disappointment that I am supporting Justin Perks for Mayor, citing his lack of political experience.
I understand the concern, but I believe many residents share a different view.
Across municipal, county, provincial, and federal governments, we routinely see massive overspending, deficits, and tax increases.
The people making those decisions almost always have political experience.
That track record suggests political experience alone is no guarantee of responsible government and can sometimes be a detriment to it.
I am a strong believer in less government.
Elected officials should approach their roles as community volunteers who serve for one or possibly two terms, not as a career.
New faces and fresh perspectives often produce better results.
Our community has a wealth of practical knowledge that can be used to find cost-effective solutions.
Municipalities have core responsibilities they must fulfill.
Beyond those required functions, optional expenditures should not be funded by taxpayers.
Large multi million dollar optional projects should be paid for through grants, fundraising, bequests, or other donations and not by increasing the tax burden.
I encourage residents to carefully examine what each candidate is proposing and to vote for those who offer real change and improvement.
Vote, this is your only chance for better government.
I support Justin Perks because I believe he represents that opportunity for Meaford and he (has) no political experience to impede his role.
