Editor,
One thing I have observed in the more than twenty years I have lived here is that the municipal taxes on home properties are always due and payable prior to the date when OAS and CPP arrive. I cannot help wondering if something nefarious is going on.
There are many senior home owners who are struggling to make ends meet who may not quite be able to make that payment until the government money comes in, which also means that that they would be hit with a small interest penalty. Small, yes, but if you multiply that many times over, it would mean that the municipality makes quick and easy money at no cost to them, but at a cost to those who cannot afford it.
Then again, it might just be my over-worked imagination. Surely the Municipality of Meaford would not do such a thing, but they certainly could move the dates forward a day or two to accommodate low income, struggling seniors. After all, government payment dates are published a year in advance.
