Reader: Firearm Regulations Make Canada Far More Safe Than the USA

Editor,

Recently, MP Ruff wrote to constituents about the Canadian Government restrictions on assault weapons. He objects to “the government’s new regulations to confiscate more firearms from law-abiding Canadians.”

I completely object to MP Ruff’s view. I think that assault weapons are for soldiers in warfare not for personal use.

Canada has much tougher restrictions on assault weapons, hand guns, large magazines, ghost guns, bump stocks, etc. I completely agree with this. Adding more restrictions does not trouble me one bit.

The U.S. has 3X the per capital gun crime as Canada. Our restrictions are responsible for that fact.

Consider also that the U.S. mass shootings as of Nov. 30 2024 are reported to be 547 incidents with 648 dead and 2,227 injured. (Source Wikipedia and others)

In the past 3 years, the U.S. has an average of 600+ mass shooting events per year.

The FBI claims there have been only 64 mass shootings (2023 data) because the FBI does not include mass shootings from: Gang violence, Drug violence, domestic disputes, hostage situations or Crossfire as a byproduct of another ongoing criminal act.

Canada has had 2 mass shooting incidents ytd in 2024 , with 2 dead 7 injured.

Canada is a much safer country because of our government firearm regulations.

I would like to hear why our Conservative MP wants to have assault weapons in citizens’ hands. The U.S. experience demonstrates that they do not make life more safe.
