Obituary: Wilcox, Lloyd Murray

Peacefully on April 30, 2021, Lloyd passed into the loving arms of Jesus at Errinrung Long Term Care Home, just four days shy of his 96th birthday. Born on May 4, 1925, in Meaford, Lloyd was the youngest son of Truman and Laura (nee Bumstead) Wilcox. He was predeceased by his sister Elsie Abbott and his brother Harold Wilcox. Lloyd was predeceased by his beloved wife Bernice (nee Doherty) in 1998 and his devoted son Brian in 2019. He is survived by his loving wife Nora (Harris) and his twin children Brad (Lynn) Wilcox and Brenda Taylor and his daughter-in-law Anne Ramsay-Wilcox. Predeceased by daughter-in-law Jackie and fondly remembered by stepdaughter Jan McCauley and her family. Lloyd was a loving and devoted grandfather to Michelle (Kevin) Macnamara, Michael (Anna) Taylor, Meghan (Mike) Boyd, Abbie (Kevin) Giroux, Alison (David) Wilcox Lanfear, Ayron (Keith) Platt, Craig (Melissa) Wilcox, Neil (Erika) Wilcox, Lindsay (Zak) Pollari, Colleen (Jeff) Hammer, and treasured great-grandfather of fifteen.

We mourn the loss but also celebrate the life of a simple, humble man whose calm, patient and supportive approach to life profoundly influenced all of us in so many ways. Lloyd would proudly tell you that he was born and raised in Meaford, lived there all his life except for his army service in WWII and in recent years when his health declined. A dedicated employee at Meaford Post Office for 29 years, he knew each person’s mailbox number by heart and as his memory started to fail, he would often say to people, “I know your box number, but I just can’t remember your name.” Lloyd exemplified his supportive, caregiving nature as he lovingly cared for his wife Bernice through her extended illness. They celebrated 50 years together just before her passing. Lloyd and Nora were married on May 5, 2001, and shared many happy years together. Nora’s love and support through the years meant a great deal to Lloyd and his family.

Lloyd was a devout Christian with strong Baptist roots and a life-long member of Meaford United Church. His strong faith carried him through life’s challenges and his love of singing favourite hymns brought joy to all. Lloyd was a proud member of the Meaford Legion Branch 32 for over 75 years and served for a time as the bookkeeper. A true gentleman in so many ways, he will be dearly missed but fondly remembered for all he taught us and the wonderful memories he gave. A generous, fun-loving soul, Lloyd hoped to bring a smile to those he met.

The family would like to express gratitude to staff at Errinrung Long Term Care who helped with Lloyd’s care. A private family service will be conducted followed by an interment at Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Meaford Hospital Foundation or to the Alzheimer’s Society through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON, N4L 1B9, to whom arrangements have been entrusted.
