The Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a false emergency call, commonly referred to as a “swatting” incident, that resulted in a significant police response in the Municipality of Meaford.
On September 24, 2026, at approximately 5:46 p.m., Grey Bruce OPP received information from a crisis support service advising they had been speaking with an individual who reported that someone inside a residence was in crisis. During the call, the helpline worker believed they heard what sounded like gunshots in the background.
Given the nature of the information received, Grey Bruce OPP officers immediately attended a residence on Denmark Street, between Edwin Street and Margaret Street. Officers established a containment area and additional police resources were deployed to ensure public safety. The OPP also issued a social media notification advising residents of a significant police presence in the area.
Through the investigation, officers determined that the reported emergency was unfounded. At approximately 7:00 p.m., police confirmed the incident was a “swatting” call and officers subsequently cleared the area.
“Swatting” calls are deliberately false reports intended to provoke a large-scale emergency response to a specific location by police and other first responders. These incidents are treated seriously due to the risks they create for the public, emergency responders, and the individuals at the targeted location.
Once a false emergency call is placed, emergency resources responding to that incident are unavailable to assist with legitimate emergencies elsewhere in the community. These calls divert critical emergency resources and cause unnecessary alarm, disruption, and stress within our community.
Placing a false call to report an emergency is a criminal offence under the Criminal Code of Canada. Individuals responsible for making such reports may face criminal charges.
The investigation remains ongoing.
