Leo Henry Girard, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, special uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 29, at the age of 86.
Born in Windsor, Ontario, on March 4, 1938, to Leo (Tatters) and Mae Girard, Leo’s life was marked by a passion for learning and a zest for life. He attended Riverside High School and went on to earn a BA in French and History from Assumption University and a Bachelor of Physical Education from McMaster University.
A dedicated educator, Leo spent most of his career at Tecumseh Secondary School in Chatham, inspiring countless students as a language teacher and coach. His impact on his students extended far beyond the classroom, as many remained close friends throughout his life.
Leo reconnected with his high school sweetheart, Judith Barr, and they married in December 1986. Together, they embarked on many adventures, travelling through Europe and “enjoying life”. After Leo’s retirement, they moved to Meaford, where they built a beautiful new home on the water just outside of town. As soon as they arrived, Leo and Judith became actively involved in their new Meaford community. Leo was a valued member of the 55+ Club, Friends of the Library, Alzheimer Society, and of course, the Meaford Golf Club.
It was at that time that Judith and Leo began spending cherished winters in Mexico, where Leo was “in his element”. He thrived there, immersed in the warm climate and the vibrant culture.
A passionate golfer, Leo spent countless hours on the course with friends and family. Quietly competitive and endlessly analytical, he was an interesting guy to share a round of golf with. He was also a skilled bowler, as evidenced by his collection of trophies. He lamented the closing of the bowling alley in Meaford, where he had spent so many pleasant afternoons with friends.
Leo’s love for travel took him to many corners of the world, from the early 1970s to 2020, including a year travelling to South America to study Spanish and a year on exchange, teaching in France. He made friends and connections wherever he went, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.
A true Renaissance man, Leo was a talented artist, athlete, and scholar. He was a sought-after trivia partner, a lover of language and learning, a man of huge curiosity, and a connoisseur of food, history, and music, ranging from Sinatra to Willie Nelson. A modest man with eclectic tastes, he was a mentor to many, a lifelong keeper of friends, and a quiet but powerful presence with a sharp wit.
Leo is survived by his loving wife Judith Barr, his brother Glen and wife Marjorie and their family, his children Christina (Tim) and Paul (Julie), their children and grandchildren, his in-laws, Gerry and Diana McGregor, special niece Kate (Lorne), and myriad friends and former students.
Leo’s family extends special thanks to Angela Vessie and her amazing team at People Care in Meaford for the attentive and compassionate care they extended to Leo and his family during his time there.
In keeping with Leo’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral. However, watch for a special Fiesta in the spring, celebrating Leo’s life and all things Mexican that he loved so much.
