Gilbert Kiernan passed away peacefully April 4, 2025, at Meaford General Hospital at the age of 66, after a long and difficult battle with illness. Though sometimes seen as a little cranky – something those close to him knew well – he had a loving and loyal heart, shaped by deep losses and persistent pain.
He never truly recovered from the passing of his beloved wife Ina Cann in 2015, who was the love of his life. Their dog Buddy, also gone now, was another cherished companion. Gil’s ashes, along with their dog’s tags, will be buried with Ina, where they can all be together again.
He is survived by his children Tiffany Kiernan (Jeff Chanter) and Sheldon Kiernan (Kate) and was a proud grandfather. One of seven siblings, he is predeceased by his sister Sharon VanHuis (Ben) and lovingly missed and remembered by Steve Kiernan (Gloria), Susan Layton, Sandra Deforge, Wendy Baker, and Richie Kiernan. Also deeply appreciated is his mother-in-law Marguerite Cann, who supported and cared for him with unwavering kindness over the years.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the emergency and nursing staff at Meaford General Hospital, especially Dr. Alanna Kozak, whose strength and compassion brought comfort during the hardest moments.
A celebration of Gilbert’s life will take place in May, where family and friends will gather to remember and honour him. There will be a Graveside service on Thursday, May 8, at 1 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Church of Christ in Meaford.
As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Meaford Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON, N4L 1B9, to whom arrangements have been entrusted.
