Not Happy With Meaford’s Water Rates

Dear Editor.

Further to David Blackburn’s letter regards above, I would gladly exchange water bills with him. I moved to Meaford in 2020 and my first water bill was $110.52 for total consumption of 7cm3, and a 30 day period. This was at the time a shock to me, never ever having to pay so much for water. The sewer charge on that bill was $2.03/cm3, and the water charge was $2.15/cm3. My most recent bill was a whopping $156.28 for a total consumption of 6cm3 for 27 billing days, and a sewer charge of $2.97/cm3 and water of $3.15/cm3. Note that I am using less water now than in 2020. This means I am paying almost $1900 per year for water!!

So my bill has increased almost 50% in a 5 year period, but I am using 15% less water!!

For comparison, here is a typical bill from my neighbour in Thornbury. Consumption of 15cm3 for a 52 billing days cost $142.56.

In my opinion, the exorbitant high cost of water in Meaford requires a detailed explanation as to why our fees for water are so high as compared to other municipalities.

Pete Russell, Meaford

Editor’s Note: I would highly recommend reviewing municipal report ‘ENG2025-03 – Review of Wastewater Rate’, which was presented to council on December 9. The 43-page document provides plenty of background regarding Meaford’s water rates. The report is available on the municipal website (meaford.ca)
