Brightshores Health System is highlighting Breast Screening Awareness Month by encouraging eligible individuals to take advantage of enhanced local access to breast cancer screening – supported by advanced digital mammography technology.
The new state-of-the-art equipment delivers sharper imaging, faster results, and improved comfort, helping detect abnormalities earlier and more precisely.
This upgrade aligns with Ontario’s expanded Breast Screening Program, which now welcomes self-referrals for individuals aged 40 to 74, a significant change from the previous threshold of 50–and removing the need for a referral by a doctor or nurse practitioner.
“Early detection is our most powerful tool,” said Dr. Neil Rosta, Chief of Medical Imaging. “Regular breast screening helps us identify breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages.”
Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer among Ontario women.
“Investing in this new digital mammography equipment reflects our dedication to providing the best possible care,” said Ann Ford, president and CEO of Brightshores. “Our goal is to make screening accessible, comfortable, and empowering. I’d like to thank our foundations and donors for their support and commitment to high-quality care for the people we serve in GreyBruce.”
The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) clinic at Brightshores’ Owen Sound location serves Grey Bruce. No symptoms or personal history are required to book a mammogram.
