‘Joe’s Summer Social’ – An Afternoon Celebration in Meaford’s Unique and Historic Beautiful Joe Park

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the unveiling of the Police Canine Unit monument, a family fun event is planned for Sunday, August 23, in the shade of Meaford’s Beautiful Joe Park. Festivities open at noon with a presentation from the Police Canine Unit.

From 1 to 4 p.m., get in the groove with live music ranging from pop, folk, blues and country by Bill Monahan, followed by Dave Hawkins, and rounding out the afternoon with Drew McIvor. The whole family will enjoy Bounce Brothers’ inflatable games, a talented face-painter, and even a caricaturist that does pets and people! Donna will host rock painting teaching you tricks and tips – fun for all ages and skill levels.

Scavenger hunts will provide an opportunity to explore the park. Refreshments will be available after 1 p.m. There will also be a few vendors/community groups including the St. Johns Ambulance therapy dogs and other special guests – perfect for a photo op. As always, Beautiful Joe’s welcome statue awaits head pats and is said to give out 100 dog-years of good luck in return.

Free walking tours with an expert from the Beautiful Joe Heritage Society are offered at 1:15, 2:15 and 3:15, offering you a chance to learn about this historic park where Canada’s most famous dog is laid to rest. Footing is level and pace is easy. These tours last about 30-40 minutes with benches strategically placed by the monuments and points of interest. You’ll be surprised what secrets the park holds and the unique history and nature encompassed in its 8.5 acres. There are even some international connections you’ll be surprised to hear about.

For the event, some seating and picnic tables are provided or bring your lawn chairs or picnic blanket. Parking within Beautiful Joe Park will be reserved for handicapped vehicles and for unloading. Best to park across from the Legion Apartments and walk across the Edwin St. bridge to Beautiful Joe Park. Beautiful Joe Park is an easy 10-15 minute walk from downtown Meaford.

This is a great family event and friendly leashed dogs are always welcome.

Joe’s Summer Social in 2026 is made possible by funding from the Community Foundation Grey Bruce.
