Intimacy is Not Only Romantic; it is a Civic Duty

Editor, Stephen Vance, The Meaford Independent,

I came across a quote that transported me to the Meaford Pump Storage Proposal (PSP), rumored as a “Done Deal”, January 18-20, 2026 Toronto, Sheraton Hotel ROMA Conference (Rural Ontario Municipalities Association).

I want to share a colleague’s stirring thoughts: “It is becoming ever more clear that intimacy is not only romantic; it is civic. It is the willingness to be implicated in another person’s safety and dignity. It is the communication that your life touches my life and my life touches yours…”

Weighing safety and dignity of my neighbours or “kin” in Meaford, is my and our intimate civic duty should a leak or breach of the reservoir occur, unexploded ordnance, toxic metals, forever chemicals create hazards, contaminate wells and drinking water, plague fish, trees, reptiles, birds, plants and more.

Let’s ensure intimacy is not only “romantic” and hold civic public consultations in Meaford with open doors.

Let’s challenge the irrelevant excursion and its summary to Ludington paid by the promoter of the archaic PSP. It does not dupe or deceive intelligent taxpayers with this fake promise: “The proposed Pumped Storage Facility presents a significant opportunity for Meaford to establish itself as a centre of excellence in this complex technology, positioning the community as a leader in innovation and putting Meaford on the map at a regional and provincial level.”
