GBCS Students Raise $4,000 With Terry Fox Run

On Thursday, September 25, roughly 750 students from kindergarten to grade eight took part in the annual Terry Fox Run at Georgian Bay Community School. This year marked the Marathon of Hope’s 45th anniversary and staff and students were geared up to ‘Finish it’ for Terry.

For around 45 minutes, students in kindergarten ran and walked laps of the tarmac while students in grades one and two ran and walked laps of the track. A dance party was also held on the tarmac. The older students trekked down to the Georgian Trail and enjoyed their Terry Fox Run there. It was an enthusiastic and energetic crowd, seeing some kids complete over 5km.

Secondary students also spent about an hour of their day devoted to running for Terry. They turned the Terry Fox Run into their first House challenge which generated lots of excitement. Students were divided into four teams, or houses, and then each house collected laps to see which one would be victorious. Team Appollo came away with the win this time.

The school set some lofty goals to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation this year. Announcements dangled the prize of extra recess time if students could raise $2,000, and the added thrill of watching the principal and vice-principals deal with an ice bucket challenge if they could reach the goal of $4,000. To the students’ delight, GBCS families helped to raise over $4,000 so they are now busy planning an extra recess and an exciting show involving an administrator and an ice dump.
