Farmers’ Market ‘Doing Things Differently’ This Season

Rather than cancel the ever-popular Meaford Farmers’ Market (MFM) this year, the market board of directors has opted to “do things differently”, according to board chair Brad Johnston.

We have opted to host four in-person markets at the Rotary Harbour Pavilion, from 3-7 p.m. on the following dates: July 16, July 30, September 3, and October 8,” he explained.

In addition to hosting the four markets, MFM has partnered with freshfind.ca, where produce can be ordered online and picked up at the Rotary Harbour Pavilion parking area between 4 and 6 p.m. on Fridays from July 16 to October 8.

The Meaford Farmers’ Market is a true farmers’ market,” Johnston said. “It is sanctioned by the Farmers’ Markets of Ontario. To be a true farmers’ market, a minimum of 51 per cent of vendors must be primary, which is defined as those who grow or raise their market offerings. Some examples of primary vendors are market gardeners, meat producers, maple syrup, and honey producers.

MFM is well above the 51 per cent threshold. Sixty-five per cent of the vendors who have registered so far are primary.

Secondary vendors are those who make something for sale but did not grow or raise the primary materials or ingredients. This includes prepared foods and artisan creations. The MFM welcomes applications from vendors in both categories. Applications are available by emailing meafordfarmersmarket2021@gmail.com.”

COVID protocols will be in place. As in past years, the MFM is planning special markets for the late fall and Christmas season (subject to COVID guidelines). More information will be available in late August.

The MFM board is looking for volunteers to help in a variety of ways. Volunteers are needed to help set up on Fridays and to serve on the board of directors. “We really need people to serve on the board to help us establish goals and make future plans,” Johnston said.
