Engagement Kicks Off for Potential Reinstatement of the Downtown Business Improvement Area

The Municipality of Meaford is inviting residents, businesses, and community members to take part in the conversation as it explores the potential reinstatement of a Business Improvement Area (BIA) in downtown Meaford.

Exploring the reinstatement of a BIA is directly aligned with Council’s Strategic Priorities to Strengthen Our Community and Grow Our Economy,” said Councillor Rob Uhrig, Chair of the Growing our Economy Advisory Committee. “This is an exciting opportunity for businesses, property owners, and residents to work together to shape the future of our downtown. I encourage everyone to share their perspectives and be part of this important conversation.”

A BIA is an association of commercial property owners and business operators who work together, with the support of the Municipality, to promote and enhance their business district. BIAs can take on initiatives such as streetscape beautification, special events, marketing campaigns, and programs to attract visitors and investment.

Municipal staff have been directed by Council to explore whether reinstating a BIA would benefit downtown Meaford. As part of this review, staff will analyze:

  • The financial impact of a BIA levy on commercial property owners
  • The proposed boundary for a potential BIA in downtown Meaford
  • The municipal resources required to support the BIA if reinstated

This analysis will be informed by your feedback and will form the basis of the recommendations presented to Council in early 2026.

Community voices will play a central role in this process. You are invited to participate through:

  • Community Information Session: Tuesday, September 24, drop in anytime between 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Meaford Hall Gallery, 12 Nelson Street East.
  • Public Meeting of Council: Monday, November 10, 5 p.m. at the Council Chambers, 257859 7th Line. Written submissions and virtual participation is also welcome.
  • Community Survey: Available at until September 24.

Full details on each opportunity, including how to participate virtually or provide written feedback, are available at meaford.ca/BIA.
