On Thursday, July 18, thirty-six golfers, members of Meaford’s Ladies 18 hole golf club members and their guests enjoyed a ‘Scramble’ to raise money for the Owen Sound Hospital Foundation’s Breast Cancer program. Organizers were pleased to also have the support of eight former members who joined in for lunch.
Marge Allin, club president, welcomed everyone and thanked Marg Tirpkoff and Donna Atkinson for again organizing the event. All the members helped out in some way for this event, along with a couple of husbands, Jack Peckitt and John Tirpkoff.
Anne Robertson, from the Foundation, was introduced and spoke of the ongoing need for diagnostic equipment and funding. The money raised at this event will be used to support the purchase of a breast coil for the MRI machine, assisting in breast cancer diagnosis. She also spoke of the need for increased government funding, as presently and for the past several years, twelve high risk patients can have this test per year. High risk patients continue to need the test each year and with new patients, it creates a problem. She thanked the group for their ongoing support.
Marg Tirpkoff thanked all those present for their generosity, as over $4,000 was raised for this year’s donation. Donna Atkinson also thanked the many community sponsors and donors for the raffle prizes. Our sponsors included: the Ladies 18 Hole club, the Meaford Golf and Country Club for waiving guests’ green fees, OK Tire and Service in Thornbury for their cash support, Simply Unique and Nancy Ellis for the table arrangements and a carnation for each lady, Ice River Springs for the water on a hot day. Among the raffle prizes were: golf games from Blue Mountain, Legacy, and Stone Tree clubs; Lilypad Spa, Thornbury; Scandinave Spa, Blue Mountain; a golf bag from Hollis Wealth; gift certificate from All Ways Travel; certificates from Collingwood Olive Oil, Dags and Willow, Corner Cafe, and Thornbury Cider. A guest donated a golf club and a ‘Birdie’ flask.
Prizes were given for the ‘Putting Contest’ and won by Barb Loranger, Anne Thompson, and Donna Atkinson, all with 50 points. Donnalee Hobson was closest to the pin on R6, Hazel Milne had the longest drive on R8, Marilyn Pink was closest to the rope on M4, and Sue MacDougald made the longest putt on M8.
Ruth Lynch from Alliston spoke of her project in that area and how others have picked up the idea to make the comfortable ‘Knitted Knockers’, for ladies who have had a mastectomy.
Norma Young, the event’s originator, and Marg Tirpkoff cut the cake celebrating 12 years of the club’s support for this important cause.
Thursday, July 25, will be a ‘Skins’ game so bring your dimes. The next ‘Chix with Stix’ game will be Thursday, August 8 at Duntroon and our regular golf game will be Tuesday, August 6.
