Dear Editor,
As a public corporation, the Municipality of Meaford belongs entirely to its citizens. Our local government exists to serve public interest, protect our pristine local environment, and manage infrastructure for the people who live here.
However, the long-term shadow of the TC Energy pumped storage proposal is fundamentally shifting our local politics. Council’s recent decision to enter a multi-million-dollar pre-development deal with TCE raises a massive red flag about corporate influence over local governance.
Municipal decisions are where provincial policies and corporate ambitions hit the neighborhood level. We need a council that remembers they are elected by, and accountable to, Meafordites alone. I urge all voters to demand transparency from every regular council and mayoral candidate before October: will you protect public ownership, or hand our future over to corporate developers?
