A new gallery is set to open its doors in downtown Meaford at 46 Sykes Street N., adding a new voice to the community’s arts scene. In an unconventional setup, the gallery occupies the front of the space, while a fully functioning hair salon operates in the back.
Positioned in the heart of Sykes Street, GUM Gallery aims to be both accessible and curious in spirit. The name, short for ‘Gallery for Unsellable Masterpieces’, suggests something playful and a little unexpected, hinting at a space that doesn’t take itself too seriously while still offering meaningful encounters with contemporary art. GUM gallery = Art to Chew On.
GUM Gallery will officially launch on Thursday, April 30, with an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. The inaugural exhibition features work by Mikael Sandblom, marking the beginning of what the gallery hopes will be an ongoing series of thoughtful and engaging exhibitions. The gallery will be a place for both locals and visitors to encounter contemporary work in an approachable setting. Whether you are a regular gallery-goer or simply curious, the opening night will be welcoming and informal.
In addition to its main exhibition space, the gallery will also include a section dedicated to the Tidbits history project, a presence for The Craig Gallery following the closure of its bricks-and-mortar location, and an area where visitors can learn more about local artists.
Community members are invited to stop by, meet others, and experience the first exhibition. The April 30 event offers a chance to see the space, engage with the artwork, and be part of the gallery’s beginning.
