Dear Editor,
The news that Owen Sound had issued residents a boil-water advisory on March 14 because of turbidity in Georgian Bay should come as a wake-up call to Meaford, one of whose councillors lives in the affected area.
Households using Owen Sound’s water have been instructed to boil their water to remove the risk of contamination because the turbidity interfered with the city’s water disinfection process.
Natural phenomena including spring run off and rain, apparently were factors.
If a natural seasonal occurrence can cause contamination of Owen Sound’s drinking water, imagine what TC Energy’s proposed pumped storage plant, churning up the bay on a daily basis year round, could do to water here in Meaford.
That plant would suck up and spew out 23 billion litres of Nottawasaga Bay water to and from the proposed storage reservoir, not just for a short period but every day — spring, summer, fall and winter.
That is 20 times the daily water reportedly used by all of Toronto, and southern York Region.
We can’t let a Calgary-based company do that to our drinking water.
Clair Balfour, Meaford
