The Community Foundation Grey Bruce (CFGB) congratulates Shaan Banday as the first recipient of the Sharifur Rahman Memorial Scholarship. The Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 2023 with a gift from an anonymous donor, in memory of Sharifur Rahman, a local business owner who tragically lost his life from injuries sustained in an assault outside his restaurant in downtown Owen Sound.
Sharif was an active member of the community whose kindness touched many people. The endowment in Sharif’s name will generate scholarships to support Grey Bruce students enrolled in full-time studies, with a strong preference given to applicants who, either themselves or their parents, are newcomers to Canada, as immigrants or refugees.
Shaan Banday is honoured to be the first recipient of the Sharifur Rahman Memorial Scholarship.
“Being Muslim in the Grey-Bruce area was something we shared in common with Sharif Rahman,” said Banday, whose parents moved to Canada in 2005. “Our newcomer experience has made me learn to appreciate the opportunities Canada offers, and I am now glad to call this place my home.”
Banday is completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He intends to return to the Grey-Bruce area to work and live. Community Foundation Grey Bruce wishes Banday and all the 2024 scholarship recipients a prosperous school year filled with enthusiasm and reward.
Community Foundation Grey Bruce holds over $2.2 million in endowed education funds that support scholarships, bursaries, and awards. Further donations can be made to the Sharifur Rahman Memorial Scholarship or any of the CFGB Endowed Funds through the CFGB website. Donors will receive a charitable receipt when qualified.
