The U11 Georgian Shores rep hockey team made history on March 19 in Thornbury, cheered on by a crowd of supporters, by becoming the first team in Georgian Shores’ history to not only compete in tier one but also be crowned champs.
This small group of hardworking kids started the season in tier three, and with dedication and a lot of hard work earned their way into tier one for the playoffs. Although the coaches and players knew this was going to be an uphill battle to win in tier one, they adopted the mantra “To be the best, you have to play the best”, and with a decisive 5-1 win against Oro, they did just that.
There’s no rest for this team as they get back to work to prepare for the OMHA’s provincial championship tournament on April 5-7 in Kingston, where they will face off against other tier one winners from across Ontario.
“We are extremely proud of this group of young players. They have overcome many obstacles as a small centre that has moved up throughout the year to compete against much larger centres. Our players have worked hard and deserve everything they have achieved so far. Their success comes from hard work and a team-first attitude. As a bench staff we would like to express how lucky and honoured we feel to have had the opportunity be their coaches. We aren’t done yet. We have one more mountain to climb and will be gearing up for provincials in April. A special thank you to those in the community who have come out to games, and to the many supportive parents. Their success is your success,” said team Head Coach Tyler Rennie.
