The Municipality of Meaford is advising that shoreline rehabilitation work on Bayfield Street will begin in the coming days. The shoreline along Bayfield Street, which spans 407 meters from Fred Raper Park to the Meaford Museum, has experienced significant erosion due to high water levels in the Great Lakes. This shoreline serves as a protective barrier for vital infrastructure, including roads, sidewalks, storm sewers, water and wastewater lines.
In 2021, a coastal engineer was retained to design the necessary repairs for the entire shoreline. The engineer conducted a comprehensive evaluation and assigned hazard ratings ranging from 1 to 5 to different sections along the shoreline. As a result, priority areas 1 and 2 were repaired in September 2021, safeguarding key portions of the shoreline.
Throughout September, the work will focus on addressing priority area 3, which plays an essential role in protecting the parking lot and sidewalk area of Fred Raper Park. The completion of repairs in this area will not only secure these essential spaces but also enhance the safety of the green space above the shoreline. This work will take approximately two to three weeks to complete during which the sidewalk along Fred Raper Park and a few parking spaces at the east end of Fred Raper Park will be inaccessible.
