Meaford’s annual Scarecrow Invasion & Family Festival and Apple Harvest Craft Show once again drew thousands over the weekend, kicking off the autumn and harvest season.
The weekend began with the Scarecrow Parade which featured Paralympian Jason Crone, several community floats, the sounds of pipe and marching bands, and of course, the infamous kazoos.
As usual, the parade snaked its way to the Rotary Harbour Pavilion where the evening festivities were held.
Not all of the Scarecrow action takes place outdoors. Prior to the festival, the judging for the annual pie baking contest took place. This year’s winning pie was baked by Stephanie Davis, while Shirley Shortt earned second place, and Gail Murray third. This year the pie contest featured a junior division which was won by Megan Acres.
Meaford Independent Publisher, Susanne Wussow was once again part of the judging team, and once again she was impressed with the entries.
“I’m always surprised at how different all the pies are. Even though they’re all apple, some are chunky, others soft; some are sweet, others tart. And the different spices and crusts make each one unique. And they’re all delicious!” said Wussow, who added that the annual Scarecrow Invasion is a great example of Meaford’s community spirit.
“One of things I enjoy most about the Scarecrow Invasion is the true community involvement. From building and dressing the Scarecrows to the apple pie contest, there’s an opportunity for anyone and everyone to contribute to the true spirit of community that makes Meaford such a special place!” said Wussow.
Another contest held each year is the scarecrow scarecrow display competition for businesses. The winner of the Inside Display award went to Tim Horton’s. The Outdoor Display award was presented to Scotiabank, with the Christ Anglican Church earning an honourable mention. The Window Display award was presented to Dean’s Carpet One Floor & Home, with Simply Unique earning an honourable mention. The Patches Best of the Best Award was presented to Tim Horton’s.
After the Friday night festivities, the Apple Harvest Craft Show once again attracted large crowds over the weekend.
Locals and tourists filled the Meaford & St. Vincent Community Centre, and the Curling Club as they shopped for artisan crafted goods. The craft show has been held for more than 30 years, and has raised nearly $1 million in funds that have been used to fund a wide range of community initiatives.
