Obituary
Gunter Neumann passed away peacefully with his family by his side at Meaford Hospital on May 19, 2018 at the age of 81.
Gunter was born in Hamburg, Germany on March 31, 1937. He immigrated to Canada in 1958 where he began working and managing in the data processing industry in Toronto. Moving to Meaford in 1973, he had entrepreneurial successes including co-ownership of Mair Travel.
He was elected to serve on Meaford council in 2006 and again the next term only to resign due to health problems. Gunter enjoyed curling, chess, and soccer and proudly cheered for Germany. He worked tirelessly to revive Beautiful Joe Park. He leaves his artistic touch on the park as the designer of several monuments and the sculptor of Beautiful Joe and around town as painter of the Museum windows, several local prints including Meaford Hall and Firehall and sculptor of Schubird, Meaford’s year-round resident scarecrow. A lover of opera, symphony, and theatre, Gunter founded Kids in the Meaford Hall to allow all local children the experience of live theatre each Christmas season. He was honoured as the Meaford Citizen of the Year in 2007.
Gunter is survived by his wife Barbara (nee Dougherty) of 30 years. He was the loving step-father of Michael (Tracy) of Meaford and Todd (Leah) of Wasaga Beach. He was a loving opa to his cherished grandchildren Alex, Taylor, Emma and Mackenna.
Gunter will be missed by brother Rolph (Toni) of King City, Sylvia of California and Ursela (late Gunter) Hern of Germany. He will also be sorely missed by his sister-in-law Donna (late Bert) Binsted of Barrie, brother-in-law Murray (Isola) Dougherty and sister-in-law Dorothy (Alan) both of Meaford. He will be remembered by several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Gunter’s life will take place at the Meaford Curling Club on Saturday June 23, 2018 from 1 until 4 o’clock.
