Food For Thought

Letter to the Editor

Editor,

The Letters page of your August 17, 2017 edition should be of great interest locally: Mike Robertson on the library issue, and nationally MP Larry Miller on the New Canada Food Guide.

Mr. Robertson provides a new perspective to the eternal library discussions, and I am in total agreement.

I also agree with our MP in his comments on an unbalanced New Canada Food Guide.

But, as a farmer, he also knows that he is not addressing the concerns most Canadians have about factory farming practices. Neither he, nor the New Canada Food Guide, addresses hormone implants into meat and poultry products, or GMOs, (genetically modified organisms) grains, oil seeds, and vegetables such as tomatoes, and farmed salmon, to mention some.

As I understand the problem, the developers of GMOs have been able to convince successive Federal Governments to prohibit identification of GMO food products on the required food value labels. What are they trying to hide?

Why are Canadian consumers being prevented from making informed choices about non-natural and modified food products?

Please Larry, comment on these concerns.

Respectfully,

Karl Braeker, Meaford
