Summer Day Camp Fun!

summercampmadscientist270Summer camp leaders Erica Plater, Sarah Almond, and Connor Long have served up just the right mix of activities – some slimy, some scrumptious – during two of the summer day camps offered by the Municipality of Meaford in conjunction with the Meaford Museum and the Meaford Hall and Culture Centre.

Children enrolled in the Mad Scientist Camp ended their week-long camp on August 4 with colourful hands, bowls full of playdough, buckets of slime, happy faces, and newfound friends. Each year, the Meaford Musuem staff choose a theme and design a camp program that will hold the attention and curiosity of children ages five to 12 years, according to leader Erica Plater. “The children have spent the week experimenting with water, thermometers, eggs, and deciphering secret messages to each other,” she said.

summercampkidskitchen270By Tuesday, August 8, a new group of children were settling into the community centre kitchen preparing chocolate energy balls, carrot hummus and pita chips, and rainbow fruit skewers under the watchful eye of Kids in the Kitchen cooking instructor Rheanna Kish and the camp leaders. Over the course of the week, the children combined baking and cooking in the mornings with organized games and outings in the afternoons.

The Mad Scientist and Kids in the Kitchen camps are part of an ongoing series of summer camps that started in July and will continue till the end of August and that include sports, science, cooking, swimming, junior firefighting, a young explorers program and a craft program.
