Reader Questions Library Study

Letter to the Editor

Editor,

I read the article on the consultant’s report on a new library for the Municipality of Meaford. My first comment is that the library Mr. Bantock is so keen to saddle the taxpayers of the municipality with is really only for the easterly portion of the municipality, ie. the former town of Meaford and St. Vincent township, because very few Sydenham residents use the Meaford library. Indeed the sign on the library says “Town of Meaford Public Library”, so I take it that Sydenham is not included, nor is St. Vincent, for that matter.

My one wish for the new year is that everyone, including consultants would “trust but verify” the information he/she receives. I refer your readers to Sections 4 and 5 of the Public Libraries Act in conjunction with By-law 01-2002.

Once you research these two items you will realize that to go ahead with the construction of a new library is statute barred. I earnestly hope that the consultant writing the report for the Meaford Library is conversant with this legislation and the bylaw, since it is prime to any contemplated change at that venue.

Again it would be a wonderful world if everyone would do their homework, their “due diligence”, before speaking or writing reports or letters. I can only hope, because in this municipality, that seems to be an impossible dream.
