Five hundred and fifty-one runners, walkers, and strollers, participated in the 20th Annual Meaford Harbour 5 Km run/walk/stroll on Saturday, July 9, setting a new record for the event.

The previous record for number of participants had been set just last year when 392 people turned out to run, walk, or stroll the five kilometre course in support of the Meaford Hospital Foundation.

The record turnout meant that the event easily surpassed its fundraising goal for this year of $50,000.

We exceeded our goal of $50,000. Preliminary estimate is at $60,000 and counting. Final accounting will be announced in the near future!” the Meaford Hospital Foundation told The Independent.

The funds raised by this year’s Harbour Run/Walk/Stroll will be augmented by another big event that took place in Meaford on Saturday.

This year the Meaford Harbour 5K Run/Walk was held on the same day as the Urban Slide event that took place on Nelson St.The Urban Slide is a 1,000 foot long slip and slide brought to town by Meaford-based company 365 Sports, who chose the Meaford Hospital Foundation as their charity of choice for their July 9 event.

In the previous 19 years of the event, the Harbour Run/Walk/Stroll has raised over $320,000 for the Hospital Foundation.
