Letter to the Editor
Editor,
What is going on at our cemetery? It was running great and looking fabulous with a very competent manager and his part time helper that could be counted on to run things in the manager’s absence.
Does Council and the senior management know anything about our cemetery? Perhaps a counter at entrances would indicate the activity.
Sitting in the gazebo when the swans were there made it a place of peace, quiet and tranquillity as the swans drew many other birds and people to enjoy and feed them. Bring back our swans!
Building a new administration building with fancy railings seems to be more important than a much needed roof on the chapel.
Please give our very efficient Cemetery Manager the help he needs to get our Cemetery back in shape.
Our cemetery is not a place to just “dump” people when they pass on. It is a place of beauty, tranquillity and respect, so let’s get back to that. Where has the respectful “Perpetual Care” gone? Our cemetery is a place of respect and not a speedway that gets a “lick and a promise”.
If Council and the senior management took the time to observe what is necessary to look after our Cemetery, they would recognize how it is cherished by many citizens spending many hours helping to look after loved ones graves.
For your information, the Cairn at the cemetery is dedicated to my uncle, the late Wilfred Barr and his father, Thomas Barr. Thomas Barr who in 1925 became the first Superintendent of Lakeview Cemetery continuing until his retirement in 1944. His son, Wilfred Barr assumed his father’s duties until retiring in 1976. As the Cairn states, The Town of Meaford honour these two men for their dedication to the beautification and maintenance of this cemetery.
Let us continue to uphold their dedication.
Respectfully,
Doug Armitage, Meaford
