Frog’s Hollow Road Closed to Cyclists

Letter to the Editor

Editor,

Frog’s Hollow road is the main cyclists’ route from Thornbury to routes south on GR7 and west to the Walters Fall’s, Bogner, and Rocklyn areas. With the climbs and low volume of traffic It is one of the most popular roads in the county with thousands of riders using this route each year.

With two months left in a six month cycling season, the town decided to tar and chip the surface from the 3rd Line to GR7 leaving this route unusable.

This inconsiderate decision demonstrates the lack of awareness of the increasing popularity and value that cycling brings to the community. The town needs to develop a working relationship with the many cycling groups, clubs and retailers to better understand the needs of this important recreational activity. Other jurisdictions throughout Canada are developing cycling strategies to attract and cater to cyclists, eg Bruce county’s annual map with 11 designated cycling routes from Mildmay to Lions Head.

With considerations to tar and chip alternatives, bike lanes, designated routes, signage, public awareness, and tourism on the table, I am confident that the cycling community will commit to working with the town to develop a cycling friendly reputation.

Let’s hear what the politicians say.
