Local artist Ken Thornburn will be launching his new series of colouring books for adults at The Ginger Press in downtown Owen Sound at 1:00pm on Saturday June 11.
With beautifully intricate historic and contemporary sketches of Grey and Bruce counties, the colouring books provide hours of entertainment.
“I’ve been sketching this area for decades,” says Thornburn, who operates Northern Flyer Designs in Tara. “These colouring books provide you with the opportunity to enhance my work and make it your own. Colouring just might become your favourite hobby…again.”
The adult colouring book phenomenon has taken publishing by storm in the last couple of years. By providing adults with a way to relax and have some fun, the act of colouring also integrates mind and body. It’s almost a meditative process and very beneficial, art therapists – including Bonita Johnson of Nemesis Group Services – suggest. Even Carl Jung used colouring as a relaxation technique back in the early 1900s, often starting his day with this activity.
Two volumes of the Bruce Grey Colouring Book ($18.95 or $30 each depending on size) are available which feature local sites including the old Tara train station, Flowerpot Island, the Paisley Mill and the original S.S. 1 Derby Schoolhouse. Samples of the artwork and a variety of pencils, crayons and markers will be available for colouring at the launch. For more information, contact 376-4233.
