Those wishing to participate in building scarecrows for the upcoming 19 th annual Scarecrow Invasion & Family Festival have one more chance on Wednesday August 19 from 9 am until noon at the Meaford Rotary Harbour Pavilion.
The theme for this year’s invasion, which takes place on October 2, is “Scarecrows Celebrate the Year of Sport.”
More than 250 scarecrows are built each year as part of the festival. The scarecrows are used to decorate the downtown as well as other areas in the municipality. The sight of scarecrows hanging from light standards, or displayed in high traffic locations have become a popular annual photo opportunity for residents and tourists.
Creating those scarecrows requires a lot of help from volunteers. Head Scarecrow, Marilyn Morris says that more than 250 volunteers help make the event happen each year.
In addition to volunteers for building scarecrows, organizers are also looking for clothing donations for dressing the scarecrows. Items required include:Long pants (jeans and overalls), colourful long-sleeve shirts, bright scarves, patches and ties.
Any items for donation can be dropped off at the Meaford Chamber Office.
