For Meaford and St. Vincent Township, the answer has been written over more than a century of service and sacrifice. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 32 celebrates its 100th Anniversary on August 15th, it is worth asking why the Legion has remained an important part of our community for an entire century.
The answer can be found in the remarkable service and sacrifice of the men and women of Meaford and St. Vincent Township.
More than 200 local men and women answered Canada’s call during the First World War. More than 500 served during the Second World War. Others went on to serve in Korea, peacekeeping missions, Afghanistan, and continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces today. Each generation has answered the call to protect the freedoms and values we sometimes take for granted.
Some returned home to build families, businesses, farms, and our community. Others never came home. Their names are forever engraved on the Meaford Cenotaph, reminding us that the price of freedom was paid by people who once walked our streets, attended our schools, and called this community home.
The rededication of the Meaford Cenotaph will be a powerful reminder that remembrance is not simply about preserving a monument—it is about preserving the stories and sacrifices of those it honours. It also reminds us that remembrance is a responsibility shared by the entire community.
That is why the Legion continues to matter.
For 100 years, Branch 32 has cared for veterans and their families, promoted remembrance in our schools, supported youth programs, and ensured that the sacrifices of those who served are never forgotten. The Legion is not simply a building or a club—it is the guardian of our community’s military heritage.
As Branch 32 celebrates this remarkable milestone, I encourage everyone in Meaford and the surrounding area to join in the celebration. It is not just the Legion’s anniversary—it is our community’s opportunity to honour the generations of local men and women whose service made our way of life possible. I also encourage everyone in Meaford to take a moment and consider becoming a member of our local Legion. Without you, the stories and our heritage disappears.
The centennial is a celebration of 100 years of service, sacrifice, remembrance, and community. I hope you’ll be there to help us celebrate.
