United Way Bruce Grey Announces Registration for Backpack Program Open for Low-Income Families

United Way Bruce Grey has announced that registration for the annual Backpack Program is now open for low-income families in the region. Families can register by calling 211. Over the past 20 years, the program has distributed 35,278 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to students in need, ensuring that every child in the community starts the school year equipped for success.

Each backpack contains grade-appropriate items such as notebooks, pens, pencils, and other essential school supplies. This year, the program aims to serve even more families, ensuring that no child starts the school year at a disadvantage.

New Coordinator: Nolan Taylor joins as the new Backpack Program Coordinator, bringing a deep commitment to community service. “I am excited to join the United Way Bruce Grey team and look forward to working with our community to support local students,” said Taylor.

Donate Supplies: Drop off new school supplies at the United Way office at 380 9th Street East, Owen Sound, or at the ‘Stuff the Bus’ event at Staples in Owen Sound, August 15-17.

Francesca Dobbyn, Executive Director of United Way Bruce Grey, emphasized the importance of the program, stating, “Education is a critical pathway out of poverty. By providing these essential school supplies, we are helping to remove barriers and give every child the opportunity to succeed in school. We encourage all eligible families to register as soon as possible to ensure their children are prepared for the upcoming school year.”
