Thoughts on Recent Tragedy

Dear Editor,

Watching the horror of a family being murdered for no sensible reason, I realized that they were killed twice.

Every life has a purpose, even if we don’t know what it is, especially when they are as hard working, gifted, socially responsible and educated as the Afzaal family was. They had dreams and potential never fulfilled, depriving the world of what they could have done. Their friends and family lost the love and leadership they provided. The sick person who killed them lost his future.

I believe nothing happens for no reason. Therefore if we look at these deaths as a call to the country to examine our hatred of people different from us, we can give their deaths a benefit and reason. However, when the Quebec government still refused to adjust their Islamophobic regulations, and the Ontario PCs voted against making a clear statement against hate and Islamophobia, they took away the reason for their deaths, killing them again; and that is unforgivable.

Sincerely,

Roberta Docherty, Meaford
