Reader Opposed to Municipality Becoming Involved in Affordable Housing

Editor,

I for one am vigorously opposed to the idea that our municipality would become involved in any way with the construction of affordable homes in this area. Housing should not be undertaken by municipalities but by provinces and federal governments. For our municipality to become involved would require the creation of yet another bureaucracy within a bureaucracy in order to proceed with such a project. It represents Empire Building at its worst, and should never be embarked upon under any circumstances. The only ones who would pay for all of this would be the taxpayers of Meaford, and considering how inefficient bureaucracies are at this sort of thing, the cost would be enormous and the results would be paltry by comparison. Furthermore, would it end at a mere 1% added to our tax bill? Sooner or later, as is always the way with taxes, someone would decide that 1% is not enough and it would become 2% etc. etc. We already have more than enough of a tax burden. Council should not be deluded into thinking that they have the answer and I sincerely hope that common sense prevails.
