Optimist Club Changes the Tune: Donations for Survivors, Not Stereotypes

To celebrate this year’s Optimist Day on February 6, the Optimist Club of Sydenham and District chose to donate mugs and coffee supplies to their local shelter, Safe ’N Sound Grey Bruce. Club members wanted to provide needed supplies to the shelter, while also looking beyond basic needs and helping folks start their day with hope.

Cards with inspirational messages were provided along with the supplies to further this effort. Optimist Club members hope to inspire other organizations and individuals to join in donating items or participating in Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) on February 22. Together we can help challenge stereotypes and promote this year’s theme for CNOY, ‘Change the Tune’.

Homelessness isn’t about personal failure – its about systemic barriers like unaffordable housing and mental health challenges. The Optimist Club’s donation drive is a beautiful example of how our community can come together to support survivors and create real change. We hope others will follow their lead by joining us for Coldest Night of the Year,” said Wren Laurel, CNOY Event Director and Fundraising Manager for Safe ’N Sound.

The Owen Sound and District Junior Optimists join their adult counterparts in this effort with their annual team entry in CNOY (Junior Optimists Owen Sound). If you are unable to participate in CNOY yourself, please consider supporting this amazing group of compassionate youth who raise much needed funds every year for Safe ‘N Sound, with some members even spending the night outside to raise awareness.

Homelessness is a struggle for these people, but does not define them,” said Junior Optimist President Isaac Holovaci, age 16.

The Junior Optimists also encourage any youth wanting to support this worthy cause, to join their team and walk with them.
