Douglas McLean of Meaford passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Meaford Long Term Care Centre on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at the age of 97.
He was the beloved husband of Rose MacLean, who predeceased him on April 9, 2025. Loving father of Michael MacLean (Jennifer). Proud grandfather of Brandon MacLean and his son Brody, Alysha Fleming (Matt) and their children Scarlet, Ryker, Ledger, and Everlet and Ashley Siegrist. Predeceased by his dear brothers Don (late Flora), Ken, and Alex (late Dorothy).
Doug grew up in St. Vincent Township, surrounded by Georgian Bay, where he spent many hours out fishing on his small boat. He was a slow methodical worker who always put in a full day’s work on the family farm and knew everything there was to know about farming and growing crops/vegetables and enjoyed doing maple syrup in the spring. He loved a long road trip up to Thessalon to visit with his brother Don and fish on the lake. Doug wasn’t a man of many words but you could get him talking over a good card game with friends. He was always helping a neighbour in need and lending a hand where he could. Always keeping busy even in retirement; he took up quilting. He made several beautiful quilts for family and friends.
He dedicated his free time to his family, always sitting around the dinner table in the evening taking it all in.
A funeral service celebrating Doug’s life will be conducted at the Olivet Baptist Church in Meaford on Friday, October 16 at 11 o’clock, after which family and friends are welcome to gather to share stories and refreshments. A private family interment at Lakeview Cemetery will follow.
As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Brightshores Wiarton Hospital Foundation or the Meaford Nursing Home Auxiliary (cheques only please) would be appreciated and may be made through the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., Meaford, ON, N4L 1B9, to whom arrangements have been entrusted.
